My heart is so small
it's almost invisible.
How can You place
such big sorrows in it?
"Look," He answered,
"your eyes are even smaller,
yet they behold the world."

70,000 pregnant people die around the world every single year from illegal abortion. They leave behind 220,000 kids since 61% of people seeking abortions are already parents. So you’ve got dead parents, dead fetuses, and orphaned kids. What part of that sounds “Pro-Life” to you?

One woman I spoke to broke down crying when I told her the nearest clinic was ten hours away. I informed her that there was another group who could help arrange travel, and yet another group that existed soley to provide lodgings. It didn’t matter. She couldn’t take that time off work. The call ended with her saying she would find another way. She didn’t mean she would go to a CPC and they would magically help her carry to term (cause they never do, the “help” stops the moment you are too far along for an abortion). She meant she was going to risk her life and her health. She was going to seek out a back-alley abortion, because legislators had systematically taken away all of the clinics she could have gone to in her area a few years ago. I keep hoping this woman calls us back.
This is an incredible and important post about abortion funds, restrictive legislation on abortion, and the harsh realities of living in the USA right now.
[NB: more people than just cis women want and need access to abortion care.]

My favorite thing about this lady gaga thing is when her stans go “you’re being a twat, it doesn’t say in the quran or any islamic scripture that she can’t wear it.” But it does say to respect one another, what falls under that is respecting that this is not apart of your religion or culture therefore you cannot appropriate it and sexualize something that isn’t apart of your identity as a muslim or a middle eastern/african/north african/asian woman (quite aware that there are white muslims). This is equivalent to me wearing a sexualized version of a nun outfit which lady gaga has done and offended many orthodox christians, but i am derailing here.
The burqa is used for modesty and as another blogger pointed out, Prophet Muhammad’s wives used to wear this because they were given the highest status of women, they were educators, they were the mothers of Islam. For someone to take that and slap it on them whenever they wish for fashion is disgraceful, also playing up the whole “oo i’m not wearing anything under this exotic middle eastern garb” is orientalism 101, playing into that fetish stereotype of muslim women who do veil. Lady Gaga is not going to make it any easier for my muslim sisters to wear the burqa in the western society, it is not up to her to interpret something that she has no idea about, she does not face the struggles of a muslim woman. Where you mess up is the fact that you think that we even need saving, if we do, then we will save ourselves, we do not need your white savior/feminism bullshit.
I also love the fact that there are people on here telling me what not to be offended by, telling me how i should feel about MY religion and culture. This is not your place to tell me how to feel, when someone from another culture is upset by your actions, do not make this about you. Also, harassing the shit out of someone online is really mature. I have tried to explain this nicely, I’ve tried to explain this rudely but some of you just don’t understand.
But themindislimitless puts it nicely:So they tried (and continue to) take away the power of our religious coverings and erasing their context and empowerment by saying they’re ‘oppressive’ and calling those who wear it backward but when that didn’t work they’re taking away what our coverings stand for by reducing them to nothing but flimsy pieces of see-through cloth portraying it as a trend for them to throw on and off when our identities are often challenged because of what we wear.
And that is how they strip us of our identities. This is how they take away everything that is important to us. (x)
Lady Gaga can take that “burqa” off whenever she wants, she will never have to face any consequences for doing so. But for my mother, my aunts and many other muslim women who do choose to wear it, this is their empowerment, their identity and they get shit for this, islamophobic bullshit spat in their faces, people who try to come and “save us”, trying to liberate us. This is not a costume, it’s not a piece of fashion, you cannot wear our identity as a costume and then take it off at the end of the day while we have to face ignorance from left and right. You will not make it easier for us, in fact…you are making it harder for us to practice our modesty and veiling, by silencing OUR form of empowerment and making it “fashion statement.”
That’s all I have to say about this anymore, I’m moving on.
So many who are upset about Gaga’s burqa write of context, yet miss the most important context of all - that of gender inequality in Muslim countries. The burqa is the ultimate symbol of female suppression and inequality. The BRIGHT PINK and TRANSPARENT burqa is indeed reappropriating the symbol, but for a pro-feminist social context. Its gaudy bright pink color is to symbolize BLATANT femininity, as opposed to the typically black burqas, that hide women and their bodies as if they are black holes, devoid of substance or individuality, not to be noticed, hidden from the eyes of others. And the transparency shows the woman BEHIND the burqa, refusing to be hidden. The color and transparency are VITAL to the success of this outfit as social critique, yet they are details that most of these gripers are missing. And please, don’t even try to tell me that critiquing gender inequality in Muslim countries is “culturally insensitive.” Human rights have NOTHING to do with cultural sensitivity. Human rights are UNIVERSAL, and all human beings deserve to be treated equally, regardless of the culture that a particular human comes from.
Let me tell you something about the Muslim women, muslim countries, and the burqa. Here is a helpful list of Muslim women who were leaders through the times who were veiled, and not veiled, in Very Muslim Countries. You will note those who are Prime Ministers and acting Prime Ministers. I don’t see a female Vice President in America, let alone a President. Please be kind enough to inform Lady GaGa about this Very Important Issue (and please note the nuns, too. They live in such plight!).
Please let me tell you something about the Burqa. Though popularized in media in black color, burqas come in variety of shapes, styles, colors, embroideries, what have you. My best friend has a pink burqa, btw. Her mother was kind enough to sew it for her in Afghanistan. But no matter, let’s talk about the Black Burqa. The color black symbolizes power. You will note that when powerful men wear their suits, they are almost always black, or in very dark colors. In regards to hiding the full body, the burqa is a direct fight against popular media and its war on women and sexist message. Note that the Burqa, standing in contrast to bikinis, is very helpful in fighting body image issues, and eating disorders that come with it. As such, it also helps bolster self esteem. Burqa, while shrouding the female body, also gives her a say in who has access to it, or who doesn’t. Again, it is very feminist thought provoking piece of cloth, and is often used in political circles by Muslim women. The Burqa, while hiding the women, directly confronts the gazer to engage her mind and personality, not reduce her to a body and curves and a sex objecct. It forces one to consider the person behind the gender. NOT THAT YOU, OR GAGA WOULD KNOW ABOUT IT, COS OHMYGOD OPPRESSED MUSLIM WOMEN!
Everyone in America should know that an actual candidate for U.S. Senate said this about women who are raped.
Please share this.
Why should women be paid equal to men? Men have been in the working world a lot longer and deserve to be paid at a higher rate. Heck, I’m a working mom and I’m not paid a dime. I depend on my husband to provide for me and my family, as should most women… and if a woman does work, she should be happy just to be out there in the working world and quit complaining that she’s not making as much as her male counterparts. I mean really, all this wanting to be equal nonsense is going to be detrimental to the future of women everywhere. Who’s going to want to hire a woman, or for that matter, even marry a woman who thinks she is the same, if not better than a man at any job. It’s almost laughable. C’mon now ladies, are you with me on this?
Good article to look into:
Not speaking up about rape jokes condones unequivocally bad behavior, demeans victims
Excerpt:
Make no mistake, this isn’t a policing of your thoughts. You’re entitled to think whatever you like without fear of punishment. Your thoughts are your own business. What I’m asking is that you filter your speech a bit and not be so careless with your words…
‘As a blog post from Men Speak Up says, “Virtually all rapists genuinely believe that all men rape, and other men just keep it hushed up better. And more, these people who really are rapists are constantly reaffirmed in their belief about the rest of mankind being rapists like them by things like rape jokes, that dismiss and normalize the idea of rape.’

A slut is a person of any gender who celebrates sexuality according to the radical proposition that sex is nice and pleasure is good for you.
